What Does the Book of Proverbs Say About Money?

The following post lists the verses in Proverbs dealing with money in the order they appear in each chapter.  For a list of these verses separated by category, click here.  This is a work in progress.  It will be updated regularly until it is finished.

Proverbs 1

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. (verses 10-19)

Proverbs 3

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. (verses 9-10)

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. (verses 27-28)

Proverbs 6

My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.  (verses 1-11)

Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.  (verses 30-31)

Proverbs 8

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.  For wisdom isbetter than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. (verses 10-11)

Riches and honour arewith me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.  My fruit isbetter than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.  I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment.  That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. (verses 18-21)
Proverbs 10
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. (verse 2)

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.  (Verses 4-5)

As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.  (Verse 26)

Proverbs 21

Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.  Proverbs 21:13

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Proverbs 21:17

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. Proverbs 21:25

He (the slothful) coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not. Proverbs 21:26

Proverbs 22

By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. Proverbs 22:4

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. Proverbs 22:9

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. Proverbs 22:13

He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. Proverbs 22:16

Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.  Proverbs 22:22-23

Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debt. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?  Proverbs 22:26-27

Proverbs 23

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.  Proverbs 23:4-5
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.  Proverbs 23:20-21

Proverbs 24

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.  Proverbs 24:27

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.  Proverbs 24:30-34

Proverbs 26

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.  As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.  The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.  Proverbs 26:13-15
