Quotes From Chapter 1: The Beginning

One idea at a time is about as much as any one can handle.

In those days we did not have the toys of to-day; what we had were home made. My toys were all tools--they still are! And every fragment of machinery was a treasure.

There is an immense amount to be learned simply by tinkering with things. It is not possible to learn from books how everything is made--and a real mechanic ought to know how nearly everything is made.

I felt perfectly certain that horses, considering all the bother of attending them and the expense of feeding, did not earn their keep.

That is the way with wise people--they are so wise and practical that they always know to a dot just why something cannot be done; they always know the limitations. That is why I never employ an expert in full bloom. If ever I wanted to kill opposition by unfair means I would endow the opposition with experts. They would have so much good advice that I could be sure they would do little work.

My father offered me forty acres of timber land, provided I gave up being a machinist.

I read everything I could find, but the greatest knowledge came from the work.

No work with interest is ever hard.

What Does the Book of Proverbs Say About Money?

The following post lists the verses in Proverbs dealing with money in the order they appear in each chapter.  For a list of these verses separated by category, click here .  This is a work in progress.  It will be updated regularly until it is finished. Proverbs 1 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which ta...

Why Is College Really Out of Reach for Most People?

Why Americans can't afford college. (It isn't because rich people want you to remain uneducated.) Each year we spend... $70 billion on lottery tickets, $73 billion on gambling, $80 billion on cigarettes, $72 billion on alcohol, $400 billion a year on infomercial purchases (that go unused), $532 million on daily internet deals, $36 billion on video games, $47 billion on pizza, $210 billion on fast food, and $9.1 billion on Halloween... ...but college should be free because we can't afford it. https://www.researchamerica.org/…/rese…/research-takes-cents https://money.cnn.com/…/11…/gallery.money_wasters/index.html This is a post I made to my FB page recently.  I received several likes, comments (good and bad), etc.  In order to clarify some statements, I posted a second time dealing with this subject.  Following is the second post. Well, my last post seemed to have gotten a few actions and reactions, so I thought I'd clarify why I wrote it before I contin...

In Pursuit of My Master's Degree

A master's degree (from Latin magister) is usually a second-cycle academic degree awarded by universities or colleges upon completion of a course of study demonstrating mastery or a high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice.  A master's degree normally requires previous study at the bachelor's level, either as a separate degree or as part of an integrated course. Within the area studied, master's graduates are expected to possess advanced knowledge of a specialized body of theoretical and applied topics; high order skills in analysis, critical evaluation, or professional application; and the ability to solve complex problems and think rigorously and independently.  (from  Wikipedia )      In 1994 I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications. ...
